The theme, such as it was, of L.A.’s surprisingly sophisticated recent Fashion Week, might be summed up—à la a high concept movie pitch—in three words: anywhere but here. With influences and inspirations ranging from a Slavic circus (Coco Kliks’ luxe take on the humble peasant dress) to a Parisian nightclub (the sharp androgynous suits and sexy party frocks at Petro Zillia), there was no hint of the sheepskin-boots-and-terrycloth-mini combo that still passes for high style in Hollywood. And, if one of the week’s highlights happened to come courtesy of a New York based designer (Morgan Le Fay’s surprisingly wearable and romantic take on prairie chic), well, that just added to the overall sense that the city was finally looking past California girl clichés towards the big fashion picture.
